Poultry Genome Effort
NIFA funding supported the distribution
and analysis of the East Lansing reference
mapping backcross population. This led to
the development of the present consensus
genetic linkage map of the chicken and the
dissemination of marker panels that allow
the map's practical applications.
Subsequent support was provided for the
development of chicken Bacterial Artificial
Chromosome (BAC) libraries and the construction
of a physical “contig” map of
the chicken genome. The contig map provides
the platform on which the complete chicken
DNA sequence is being assembled. Additional
funds contribute to the integration of the
physical and linkage maps with the DNA sequence,
so all chicken genes can be identified, located
in the genome, and further analyzed.
