Pennington Biomedical
Research Center
In the United States alone, more than 300,000
deaths per year are attributed to obesity,
and more than half of all adults are overweight
or obese. The Pennington Biomedical Research
Center at Louisiana State University, Baton
Rouge, is recognized throughout the world
for its studies in this field.
Current research in the Center's basic laboratories
focuses on the physiological and genetic basis
for the control of energy balance and the development
of obesity and on the mechanisms that regulate
food intake and energy expenditure. Current
clinical research includes studies of diet,
abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, fatty
acid and energy metabolism, and the role of
menopause in the development of obesity.
The Pennington Center also has a strong
record of clinical research accomplishments
in the prevention and treatment of obesity
and related metabolic syndrome components,
such as type 2 diabetes. Interactions between
the basic and clinical research laboratories
allow the Center to investigate the role
of genetic heritage on the development of
obesity and favor the development of primary
prevention strategies.
The
Pennington Center has received several
grants from the NIFA National Research
Initiative (NRI) Competitive Grants—Improving
Human Nutrition for Optimal Health Program.
