NIFA Partnership with the National Institute on Aging
NIFA has partnered with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and is a member of the NIA Collaborative Initiative. NIA was formed in 1974 by Congress specifically to provide leadership in aging research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs relevant to aging and older people. In addition, resources are available for health and community professionals as well as for the scientific researcher.
The partnership between NIFA and NIA allows the two agencies to share resources and work together to improve the health and well-being of older Americans. NIFA promotes healthy aging of older individuals and their families in a number of ways—nutrition guidance, adult development and aging programs, family caregiver support, and intergenerational approaches—through education, research, and outreach. Through these efforts extension specialists, educators, and others can effectively use and disseminate NIA materials to appropriate audiences at the state, county, or community level. These materials augment the resources available at eXtension related to family caregiving. Also see the Adult Development and Aging pages on the NIFA Web site.
