Walk Across Texas!
Walk Across Texas! is an 8-week walking program to help people of all ages support one another to establish the habit of regular physical activity. The program is recognized as a Best Practice Physical Activity Program by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Why is this program important to Texans?
- Twenty-five percent of Texans are obese.
- Twenty-five percent of children are obese.
- Only 25 percent of adults and 25 percent of high school students get regular, moderate exercise.
- Twenty-nine percent of American adults are not physically active.
Impact of Walk Across Texas!
- Provides opportunity for individuals or groups to participate in regular physical activity.
- Seventy-nine Texas counties participated in 2006.
- More than 14,525 people registered and 1,122 people finished the 8-week program.
- Fifty percent of participants report feeling decreased stress after participating.
- Participants will experience reduced incidence, severity, and health care cost of chronic diseases that are linked to overweight and inactivity.
