Bulgaria Development Project, 1993 – 1996

In 1993 the former Extension Service (ES), USDA, successfully developed and conducted pilot extension programs at Plovdiv, Kyustendil, and Gorna Oriahovitsa in collaboration with three Bulgarian agricultural research institutes, a seed propagation station, regional agricultural officials, mayors, and other local agricultural leaders. These programs were focused on, but not limited to, fruit and vegetable extension efforts and were closely integrated with other USDA fruit and vegetable initiatives as well as extension and outreach efforts carried out by the Citizens Democracy Corps (CDC), Volunteers for Overseas Cooperative Assistance (VOCA), and the European Community’s Poland and Hungary Action for Restructuring of the Economy (PHARE) project. In addition, field teams explored organizational options for conducting extension activities at the local and regional levels. The teams facilitated several workshops on organizing extension activities in Bulgaria. These grew out of ES’ pilot efforts, the CDC’s livestock extension program at Stara Zagora, and PHARE’s review of Bulgaria’s agricultural science organizations.
