Multistate Research Projects

Multistate research projects focus on high-priority topics among the state agricultural experiment stations (SAESs) in partnership with NIFA, other research institutions and agencies, and the Cooperative Extension System. Their goal is to enable joint problem-solving activities beyond the scope of a single SAES, and to provide a more efficient and comprehensive approach to resolving serious problems. Among the multistate research projects that focus on environmental and resource economics issues are:

• Balancing Natural Resource Recreation Management, Human Well-Being, and Community Resilience (NECC1011)
• Benefits and Costs of Natural Resources Policies Affecting Public and Private Lands (W2133/W1133)
• Economic, Social, and Ecological Issues of Rangeland Fragmentation that Affects Rangeland Sustainability and Rural Communities (W1192)
• Interfacing Technological, Economic, and Institutional Principles for Managing Inter-sector Mobilization of Water (W1190)
• Marketing, Trade, and Management of Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources (W1004)
• Population Change in Rural Communities (W1001)
• Rural Change: Markets, Governance and Quality of Life (NE1029)

Another example of the multistate approach is the Southern Natural Resource Economics Committee (SERA 30), a coordination and planning group. This group's objective is to provide needed information to federal and state agencies so that a prudent decision can be made that enhances the economy and protects the environmental quality in the region.
