United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Meeting
The Third Regional Implementation Meeting of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on January 28-29, 2008. The meeting focused on the progress made in implementing sustainable development goals in the areas of agriculture, rural development, land management, desertification, and drought in the context of climate change and Africa.
In her keynote address, former CSREES administrator, Dr. Colien Hefferan emphasized the importance of expanding knowledge and the application of ever-evolving scientific advances in the production, processing, distribution, and use of agricultural products as fundamental to the long-term, world-wide sustainability of agricultural systems.
Meeting attendees included delegates representing governments, intergovernmental organizations, United Nations agencies, and civil society organizations. Among the issues discussed were how to meet the growing demand for agricultural commodities while protecting natural resources, agricultural subsidies, and the competing interests between food security and bioenergy production.
The aim of the Geneva meeting was to prepare the contribution from the UNECE region to the 16th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development to be held in New York, NY on May 5-16, 2008.
