Phosphorus Management
Publication
A new regional extension publication, "Agricultural
Phosphorus Management and Water Quality
Protection in the Midwest," addresses
the use of phosphorus in agriculture in
the Midwest. The publication, written for
nutrient management planners, contains
information on:
- the risk of phosphorus delivery to surface
waters,
- the assessment of this risk, and;
- the cost effectiveness of phosphorus
management options for reducing this risk.
The publication addresses the importance
of phosphorus to agriculture and phosphorus
dynamics in surface waters, and lists the
phosphorus-indices of each state. It also
discusses how management practices can contribute
to the risk of phosphorus loss to surface
waters. The publication also describes cost
and effectiveness of alternative management
practices and manure application strategies.
The information is targeted to U.S. EPA
Region 7, comprised of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri,
and Nebraska. It was written by an interdisciplinary
team of research and extension professionals
from that region and supported in part by
the Heartland
Regional Water Quality Initiative.
