Managing Deer Populations

In recent years, white-tailed deer have adapted to changing environments in Midwestern states and have greatly multiplied in numbers. Deer are a pest in many rural and urban areas today, causing significant economic impacts and posing a human safety hazard, especially in collisions with cars.

NIFA contributes administrative coordination for a multistate team of researchers in the Midwest and Northeast that is developing land and deer management techniques to reduce these harmful effects. The team is seeking to understand how land-use factors affect deer distribution and movement.
