Home and Garden Information
Center
Since 1990, the University
of Maryland’s
Home and Garden Information Center
has offered an in-state gardening hotline
answered by an array of horticulture consultants.
The service also allows clients to send an
electronic question through the Web site.
Now, through an IPM special projects grant
from NIFA, this service has expanded to
include all the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast
regions.
Other information on the HGIC site includes
a large collection of fact sheets, timely
tips, and links. The HGIC is also heavily
involved with invasive pest issues, such
as sudden oak death, and is currently working
to develop additional Web pages on soybean
rust and the brown marmorated stink bug.
The HGIC
site also includes a unique plant
diagnostic subsite
which utilizes a large array of color images
to help the user diagnose plant problems.
The HGIC staff of horticulture consultants
is also responsible for writing fact sheets
and teaching manuals, Web site development,
teaching, applied research projects, and
media outreach.
