Outstanding young plant breeder recognized
Recruiting and retaining top quality young researchers into plant breeding is a critical need, as identified by the Plant Breeding Coordinating Committee, of PBCC. The PBCC is a multistate project established to analyze and communicate about the contributions of plant breeding to national strategic goals for agriculture, and to assess critical needs for maintaining strength in plant breeding. To help meet the need for young breeders, the PBCC established an Early Career Award for Excellence to recognize an outstanding young, pre-tenure plant breeder. The inaugural award for 2009, the first year that the award has been given, was presented to Dr. Stacy Bonos, a turf grass and biofuels breeder from Rutgers University in New Jersey. Read more about the Dr. Bonos’s work here.
About Multistate projects:
High-priority topics often require coordination among more than one state. State agricultural experiment stations (SAESs) and NIFA have developed multistate projects, such as the PBCC, as a way to conduct or coordinate research among multiple states, in partnership with NIFA. Other research entities and the Cooperative Extension System can be included in multistate projects. Learn more about multistate projects here.
