CSREES Agricultural Water Security White Paper
The CSREES Agricultural Water Security White Paper charts a course towards sustainable water use by: introducing a new initiative to secure adequate water supplies for domestic water consumption, ecosystem services, recreation, and aesthetics while meeting the needs of food and fiber production; and defining national goals and partners to create and enhance research, education, and extension programs funded by CSREES.
The CSREES Agricultural Water Security White Paper details the water security issues and problems relevant to agriculture and natural resources management; and describes how CSREES, the federal partner with the nationwide land grant university system, is establishing a new initiative in agricultural water security to move us towards sustainable water use. It will support and coordinate cutting edge research and innovative education and extension programs nationwide. These programs will fill critical knowledge gaps and provide tools and technologies to ensure USDA's ability to address water crises proactively. The white paper puts into action bold steps identified at the USDA Research, Education, and Economics mission area listening session on agricultural water security. It outlines opportunities for new partnerships with other federal agencies, private, and non-profit groups and strengthens the partnership between USDA-CSREES and the land grant universities.
