Venue and Time
Friday, December 1, at the Chicago Marriott, Downtown Magnificent Mile (Clark Marriott Ballroom located on the 4th floor). Talks will begin at 7:45 a.m. and conclude by 5:15 p.m. There will be a social gathering/informal networking session where NIFA staff will provide program updates until 6:30 p.m. This is part of a satellite meeting of the CRWAD 2017 - 98th Annual Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases (CRWAD), December 3-5, 2017.

Electronic Program Booklet
The final program booklet has been sent via email. It consists of the program agenda and links to awardee progress reports. Progress reports should be up to date by November 13. For guidelines on what should be included in an annual report, please review the Annual Report Instructions to Awardees document. All attendees are strongly encouraged to print a copy of the booklet or save an electronic copy to use at the PD meeting. We will not provide hard copies at the meeting.
Oral Presentations
The general order of the presentations is detailed in the agenda. You can also find it below on this resource page. Presentations should mimic the TED TALKS style of presentation. Please note that talks are limited to a total of 15 minutes and are divided as follows:
- 10 minute talk
- 3 minute Q/A
- 2 minute transition
Lightning Talks
The order of lightning talk presentations is detailed in the agenda. You can also find it below on this resource page. Participants will have four minutes to present to a fictional Gates-type foundation for $2 million dollars. For more information on the lightning talks, review the 2017 PD Lightning Talks document. However, participants must adhere to the following:
- 4 minutes
- 4 slides of data
- New Impacts/outcomes
Poster Sessions
Posters should be 4 ft tall by 4 ft wide. The morning poster session (Session A) is scheduled from 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and the afternoon session (Session B) is from 1:40 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. Poster presenters need to remain by their poster board and display during their scheduled presentation time. We strongly encourage all poster presenters to set up their poster displays no later than 8:00 a.m. in the Chicago Ballroom.
Acknowledgement of Funding
Presenters are encouraged to use the NIFA identifier for the acknowledgement slide of their PowerPoint presentations or posters at the NIFA PD meeting, and at other professional meetings or conferences.
- For US-UK Collaborative Awards funded by AFRI Foundational Animal Health and Disease, please use the following language: "This work was funded by USDA-NIFA Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grant no. XXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX and by the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council grant # (supplied by your UK collaborator) as part of the joint NIFA-BBSRC Animal Health and Disease program.”
- For awards funded through the Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases (EEID) interagency program, use the following language: “This work was funded by USDA-NIFA AFRI grant # XXX-XXXXX-XXXXX as part of the joint USDA-NSF-NIH-BBSRC-BSF Ecology and Evolution of Infectious Diseases program.”
- All other awards must use the following language to properly acknowledge your AFRI award in your posters (as well as abstracts, project websites, published manuscripts, presentations, press releases): “This project was supported by Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grant no. XXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.”
We expect that you will use our agency’s identifier in all of your slide and poster presentations resulting from your AFRI award. Additional information on appropriate acknowledgement your award can be found on the Acknowledgement of USDA Support by NIFA webpage.
