Evolving the National Reporting System

After five years of hard work, USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) launched the integrated National Reporting System (NRS) last year.

The new system offers significant improvements, but user feedback made clear that additional features were needed. New features have been added—building on a successful system that’s already improving data collection and reducing our partners’ reporting burden.

Improvements—Mission Critical

One of NIFA’s 2022 goals is to continue technology modernization efforts across the agency to provide the best customer service and user experience. The improvements to the NRS represent one way we are working to achieve that goal. Additionally, they are part of USDA’s larger commitment to see the agency become a data-driven and customer experience-centered organization.

Key Upgrades

  • Users can submit results for capacity-funded research projects and Extension programs in NRS.
  • Users can now add, edit, view and submit results for approval within NRS.
  • Email notifications will alert users to important changes in project/program status.
  • Users can filter and search by Knowledge Area to more easily find projects/programs pertaining to a specific subject matter.
  • Overall system and design improvements include a new, reorganized design to the project view and more intuitive button features.

NIFA’s Planning, Accountability and Reporting Staff held a webinar on February 17, 2022, to provide a live demonstration on the upcoming annual report builder module set to release in the next month. NIFA will continue to refine the NRS based on partner feedback. Watch the webinar here.

NIFA is committed to embracing innovation, making smart decisions about technology and building a resilient infrastructure as we strive for continuing improvement.
