The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) is NIFA's flagship competitive grants program. The purpose is to support research, education, and extension work that address key problems of national and regional importance in sustaining all components of food and agriculture. Established by the 2008 Farm Bill, and re-authorized under the 2014 Farm Bill, AFRI supports work in six priority areas outlined in the annual review.
In FY 2016, AFRI received $350,000,000 to administer and support basic and applied research, education, and extension programs. These programs expanded NIFA's existing investments and created new opportunities to address the food and agricultural sciences.
The AFRI 2016 Annual Review provides an overview of the AFRI competitive grants program, including statistics for projects funded, summaries of selected projects, and impacts of selected projects funded in the designated fiscal year. The printable version of the AFRI FY 2016 Annual Review can be found at the bottom of this webpage.
