Overview
The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) - Produce Prescription Program supports projects that demonstrate and evaluate the impact of fresh fruit and vegetable prescriptions to increase procurement and consumption of fruits and vegetables, reduce individual and household food insecurity, and reduce healthcare usage and associated costs.
NIFA requests applications for the GusNIP Produce Prescription Program to conduct projects that demonstrate and evaluate the impact of fresh fruit and vegetable prescriptions to:
- increase procurement and consumption of fruits and vegetables
- reduce individual and household food insecurity
- reduce healthcare usage and associated costs
Eligibility
- Nonprofit organizations
- Governmental agencies
- Veterans’ Health Administration and various components of its healthcare system, such as hospitals or clinics are eligible governmental agencies.
- Partners and Collaborators
- Applicants for GusNIP grants may seek and create partnerships with public or private, nonprofit or for-profit entities, including links with academic institutions (including minority-serving colleges and universities and Tribal colleges and universities) and/or other nongovernment entities; and/or partnering entities for the purposes of providing additional resources.
Fiscal Agent
If a nonprofit organization cannot accept federal funds directly, a letter must be included in the application stating that in the event the application results in an award, the award funds must be administered through a fiscal agent organization on their behalf. This agent must be identified in the letter from the applicant and the letter must be countersigned by an authorized representative of the fiscal agent organization. The letter must include the fiscal agent’s point of contact, address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address. This letter is to be included as an attachment to Field 12, Other Attachments (Part IV.B.3.c.) of the application. In the event an application is recommended for funding, NIFA will request that both the applicant institution/organization and the fiscal agent organization submit complete management information (see Part V. D). Include documents showing the organization’s nonprofit status when responding to this request.

GusNIP NTAE Center
The Nutrition Incentive Hub serves as the GusNIP Nutrition Incentive Program Training, Technical Assistance, Evaluation, and Information (NTAE) Center. They provide free one-on-one support, as well as templates, checklists, webinars, and other resources, to all GusNIP grantees and applicants. Applicants are highly encouraged to take advantage of these technical assistance resources and services.
Consultation with the Nutrition Incentive Program Training, Technical Assistance, Evaluation, and Information Center prior to applying is encouraged for new applications.

Resources for Awardees
During the Pre-Award phase, NIFA announces funding opportunities, and accepts and reviews applications.
During this phase, meritorious applications are recommended for funding, applicants are notified, and awards are finalized after processing the required documents.
The Post-Award phase begins on the date specified in the Period of Performance in the Notice of Award. In this phase of the grant process, grant payments are made and awardees work in partnership with NIFA to ensure proper stewardship of federal funds.
