USDA engages in a wide variety of education and awareness activities aimed at increasing public knowledge about nutrition, food safety, and community food security.
Public education activities have been an intrinsic function of the department since its founding by Abraham Lincoln in 1862. In reference to community food security, these activities help give Americans the tools to make wise choices — and take appropriate actions — to improve the nutrition levels of their diets, the safety of their food, and the structures in their community to combat hunger.
