Nutrition and health enhancing programs coming from Minority-Serving Institutions (MSI) are growing.
Increasing rates of diabetes, obesity, and obesity-related chronic heart diseases have already reached epidemic proportions nation-wide in all age groups. These alarming rates are equally shared by minorities in the United States.
NIFA offers multiple grants in research, education, and extension that benefit MSIs. Partnerships among land-grant and non-land-grant institutions and organizations strengthen program developments and resources. These partnerships have resulted in innovative research, education, and extension nutrition and health-enhancing programs that are culturally appropriate (e.g. on promoting healthy traditional foods and herbs vs. store-bought refined foods).
