This month’s edition on Tuesday, November 15, from 11 to 12:30 p.m. ET, will begin with NIFA’s Acting Director, Dr. Dionne Toombs, sharing her vision for the role of 1890 Land-grant Institutions Programs in helping to prioritize nutrition security. Dr. Toombs will also provide an overview of the recent White House Conference for Hunger, Nutrition and Health and share how NIFA is working to implement the National Strategy with the goal of ending hunger, improving nutrition and physical activity, and reducing diet-related diseases and disparities. Dr. Manoharan Muthusamy will provide an overview of the 1890 Centers of Excellence Program, followed by featured panelists highlighting work being done through the Center of Excellence for Nutrition, Health, Wellness and Quality of Life.

Prioritizing Nutrition Security: The Role of 1890 Land-grant Institutions Programs

Dr. Dionne Toombs, NIFA’s Acting Director, will kick off this edition of the NIFA Nutrition Security Webinar Series by sharing her vision for prioritizing nutrition security and the important role 1890 Land-grant Institutions Programs have in helping NIFA in this work. Dr. Toombs will also provide an overview of the recent historic White House Conference for Hunger, Nutrition and Health and the National Strategy that was released the day before the conference and discuss how NIFA is working to implement the national strategy to reach the conference goals of ending hunger, improving nutrition and physical activity, and reducing diet-related diseases and disparities. Then, Dr. Cassandra Huey will moderate the webinar deep dive on the role of 1890 Land-grant Institutions Programs, starting with an overview of the program by Dr. Manoharan Muthusamy. Next, Dr. Fatemeh Malekian will provide an overview of Southern University’s 1890 Center of Excellence for Nutrition, Health, Wellness and Quality of Life and share who they are working with to address diet-related health disparities in historically underserved populations. Specifically, Dr. Malekian will discuss the consequences of diet-related disparities and cultural factors that may contribute to higher rates of obesity among African Americans. She will also highlight ways the Center is working toward their mission to improve health and well-being of underserved and minority populations through research, teaching and Extension. Efforts include the use of Artificial Intelligence to monitor glycemic index through the LLENA (AI) app and developing approaches to improve access to healthful foods among families living below the federal poverty line impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

NIFA stakeholders including academics, practitioners and decision makers working to prioritize nutrition security. And any organization that seeks to help underserved and/or minority populations address diet-related disparities through nutrition research, teaching, and extension.
