Programs

NIFA programs are the mechanism by which we pursue our mission to invest in and advance agricultural research, education, and extension to solve societal challenges. Some programs administer funding and offer leadership while others focus on national leadership and collaboration. For more information on a particular program, use the site’s search tool.

Food and Agriculture Cyberinformatics and Tools Initiative

The AFRI Food and Agriculture Cyberinformatics and Tools (FACT) initiative seeks to catalyze activities that harness big data for synthesizing new knowledge, to make tailored and accurate data driven predictions, and foster data-supported innovation in agriculture.

AFRI Sustainable Agricultural Systems

The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative's Sustainable Agricultural Systems (SAS) program area promotes the sustainable supply of abundant, affordable, safe, nutritious, and accessible food and other agricultural products, while enhancing economic opportunities and improving the long-term health and well-being of all Americans.

Global Change and Climate Programs

One of the most pressing issues facing plant and animal producers today is the ever-changing conditions and impacts of climate variability. Another critical issue is the need for scientific information that producers can use to plan and make decisions to ensure economic viability while facing these challenges. NIFA-supported global change and climate projects are addressing these issues through research, extension, and education activities.

AFRI Resilient Agroecosystems in a Changing Climate Challenge Area

The AFRI Resilient Agroecosystems in a Changing Climate Challenge Area focuses on understanding the interaction between climate variability and agricultural production systems so that we can develop resilient agricultural systems under changing environmental conditions.

AFRI Water for Food Production Systems Challenge Area

The AFRI Water for Food Production Systems Challenge Area focuses on multidisciplinary systems approaches, which integrate new technologies and strategic management that solve water availability and quality challenges in food production systems.
