Programs

NIFA programs are the mechanism by which we pursue our mission to invest in and advance agricultural research, education, and extension to solve societal challenges. Some programs administer funding and offer leadership while others focus on national leadership and collaboration. For more information on a particular program, use the site’s search tool.

Animal Breeding, Genetics, and Genomics

Animal breeding programs are ensuring the availability of nutritious animal protein critical for human development and a growing world population, while reducing our environmental footprint.

Water Programs

American communities depend on a safe and reliable water supply. Through research, education, and extension, NIFA water programs provide basic knowledge and learning opportunities needed to address agricultural water quality and quantity issues.

Farm Safety

NIFA addresses farm safety by supporting Cooperative Extension Service programs that train youth and adult farm workers in safe field practices, equipment use, and equipment maintenance and help farmers with disabilities and their families maintain engagement in production agriculture.

Air Quality Programs

Agricultural producers face regulatory pressures related to air quality. NIFA seeks to assist these producers by providing sound science applications to protect the environment while maintaining a viable production system. Research activities develop emission data and improve measurement, control, and transport of odor, gases, and particulate matter. Outreach activities include transferring technologies and best practices to producers and regulators to reduce pollutants and greenhouse gases.

Markets, Trade & Policy

Successful marketing - getting products from producers to domestic and international consumers - is vital to the well-being of U.S. farmers and ranchers, and to the health of the economy as a whole.
