Central America (Hurricane Mitch Reconstruction) Development Project, 1998-2001
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) provided funds to NIFA to assist Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala in the implementation of two Special Objectives:
- Rehabilitating rural watersheds.
- Reducing agricultural health risks (animal and plant health, food safety).
Under agreements with NIFA, Cornell University collaborated with Purdue University and North Carolina A & T University to carry out activities designed to meet the first objective. Under the second objective, the University of Hawaii, Auburn University, and the University of Arizona collaborated on aquaculture activities (shrimp farming); Texas A & M University took the lead on integrated pest management, dairy safety, and good agricultural practices; and North Carolina State University headed an effort to enhance agricultural extension programs in the region. In addition to these project activities, NIFA met ongoing requests from USAID missions in the region for technical assistance.
