As Director of the Division of Nutrition, Dr. Paul Cotton, Ph.D., RDN provides national leadership for nutrition programs and activities at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). Additionally, he supervises a staff of National Program Leaders, Program Specialists, Program Assistants and others, while providing support and leadership for nutrition research, education, and extension at NIFA. Dr. Cotton leads others in applying science-based knowledge to solving complex problems in the food and agricultural sciences. He joined NIFA in May 2016 as the National Program Leader for Public Health Nutrition. Dr. Cotton previously served as Assistant Division Director in the Division of Receipt and Referral, Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 2014 to 2016. From 2005 to 2014, Dr. Cotton served as a Program Director and Team Lead at the National Institute of Nursing Research, NIH. In 2000, he started his federal service as a Category 4 Scientist at the Beltsville, Human Nutrition Center, ARS, USDA after serving as faculty and staff at Howard University (1983-2000), where he received his Ph.D. in Human Nutrition.
