Keeping Ag Producers, Families on the Job

In FY 2016, NIFA awarded $4.2 million in grants through the AgrAbility Program to support 20 state and regional programs. The University of Maine’s AgrAbility program provides health and safety information for the state’s high visibility professions, including commercial fishing and logging. Missouri AgrAbility, a partnership between the University of Missouri and Lincoln University Cooperative Extension, partnered with the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy to minimize health risks and avoid re-injury related to prescription medications for disabled farmers.

Water Treatment Could Prevent Algae Blooms, Reduce Carcinogens

A team at Missouri’s Lincoln University, supported by NIFA funds, developed cost-effective water treatment technologies for small water systems. Preliminary results show that their methods are fast and effective for DOC removal and reduction of DBP forming potential. Pilot-scale studies will be conducted soon to validate lab results.

Switchgrass Equal to, If Not Better than Cordwood?

NIFA-funded research at University of Missouri’s Bradford Research Farm shows that baled switchgrass has about the same British thermal unit output and burn duration as cordwood, per equal weight but with significantly less ash residue and carbon emissions.

Zinc Plays Vital Role in Human and Animal Fertility

Researchers at the University of Missouri (MU) have found that zinc plays a key role in promoting fertility in males, a discovery that has implications for improved in vitro fertilization and artificial insemination in livestock, and for human infertility diagnostics and therapies. NIFA supports this research through the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative. This impact was featured in the July 28, 2018 issue of Fresh from the Field.
