The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) is NIFA's flagship competitive grants program. The purpose is to support research, education, and extension work that address key problems of national and regional importance in sustaining all components of food and agriculture. Established by the 2008 Farm Bill, and re-authorized under the 2018 Farm Bill, AFRI supports work in six priority areas outlined in the annual review.
