Safeguarding the nation’s food supply requires that the food supply be regulated and monitored according to science-based principles. Ensuring food safety covers a broad range of processes, from on-farm production to processing, distribution, storage, selection , preparation and consumption. NIFA collaborates extensively with other government agencies, universities and colleges, and private-sector partners to safeguard the country’s food supply, prevent foodborne illnesses and educate all food handlers, including consumers.
The below are highlights from the Food Safety Division.
Jelly Ice Cube by University of California, Davis
A1511 “Nanotechnology for Agricultural and Food Systems” where nanoscale science, engineering, and technology embrace opportunities in a wide range of critical challenges facing agriculture and food systems. Nanotechnology is the science of studying and producing materials and devices of nanometer size. This AFRI funding program encourages applications with innovative ideas to develop nanotechnology-enabled solutions for food and nutrition security with a focus on the reduction of food loss and waste. In 2019, the jelly ice project was found to be a meritorious application and funded to UC-Davis.
This Jelly Ice Cube by UC-Davis was the only NIFA funded project by A1364 Novel Foods and Innovative Manufacturing Technologies to be selected to showcase/demonstrate in the Ag Outlook Forum last week.
